Editing something is so much more than about the grammar and spelling. We are constantly facing all types of conundrums. Here is an example from an editors online chat forum: Ive flooded a few engines in my time, and when I did, it took at least a few minutes for things to dry out. In my current copyedit, a novel, a novice driver floods an engine several times, and recovery is always immediate. This novice driver is dealing with her first-ever stick shift. I strongly suspect that what shes doing is stalling, but Im not sure. Question #1: This is a very new car. Can state-of-the-art passenger vehicles recover from flooding more quickly than the kind of vehicle Im familiar with? Question #2: This novel is a translation from the German. Translator is BrE and very experienced. I dont know German or have access to the original. Is it possible that the original German word could be translated either way?
