Editorial 9/24/2014 The US Politicians and Hungary (in the US they have a popular approval rating ranging from 17% to 42%) Our Hungarian non-profit foundation has spent the past five years improving the relations between the USA and Hungary through charitable works, sponsoring new cooperatives, and helping to bring innovations to market. Hungarians have long been supporters of freedom and had a love affair with my America. The good will that we have built up and the love affair are being slowly destroyed by the politicians in the USA who are listening to and repeating the distorted and many times false stories about Hungary by the representatives of the Hungarian opposition -who have lost the last two democratically held elections by large margins. The below is the latest of the many unsupportable and false statements our US politicians made about the situation in Hungary: President Obama (September 23rd, 2014 whitehouse.gov website) : From Russia to China to Venezuela, you are seeing relentless crackdowns, vilifying legitimate dissent as subversive. In places like Azerbaijan, laws make it incredibly difficult for NGOs even to operate. From Hungary to Egypt, endless regulations and overt intimidation increasingly target civil society. And around the world, brave men and women who dare raise their voices are harassed and attacked and even killed. Besides being hypocritical about democracy (see the scandal of the NSA eavesdropping on American citizens-and the illegal IRS surveillance of conservative organizations --under the Obama administration), the statement compares what is going on in Egypt, (and by innuendo Russia, China, Venezuela) to Hungary--which is absurd. The current Hungarian government was democratically elected by a two thirds majority twice. The issue about NGOs relates to foreigners engaging in various types of support for opposition political parties --which is well within a democracys right to investigate and control--similar to laws in the US. Where do we go from here? The first step would be for our US politicians to study the facts and talk to other than the opposition parties and their friends in the US. Second, they should acquire some knowledge of other countries, their cultures, and their fights for freedom and democracy. Third they should practice diplomacy and hide the arrogance which comes from being a big power, and stop constantly lecturing foreigners on what they should do in their countries. If our US politicians do not change, they run the risk of turning friends into enemies. (Jules) Gyula Balogh President amerikaimagyarklub.org/
