Editorial:Ethiopia and Sudan .. Strategic Partnership A bilateral summit meeting between Sudan and Ethiopia started yesterday chaired by President Omer Al Bashir and the Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn. The summit is preceded by meetings of the Higher Joint Ministerial Committee at the level of Foreign Ministers in which Foreign Minister Ali Karti will chair the Sudanese side and the Ethiopian side will be headed by Foreign Minister Tadros Adhanon. The Sudanese-Ethiopia High Committee meetings comes in the context of strengthening the historical relations between the two countries, especially, that Ethiopia is considered one of the most important neighboring countries to Sudan. The visit will benefit the two countries in economic, commercial and border fields, highlighting the good relations linking Sudan and Ethiopia at the official and popular levels. The Sudanese-Ethiopia High Committee meetings outcome will be endorsed by the two leaders in their summit and will result to the signature of several MoU on the political, economic, social, culture and tourist fields, in addition to agreement between the Bank of Sudan and the Ethiopian Central Bank to facilitate trade between Sudan and Ethiopia besides other agreements in youth and sports, industry and employment fields. We believe that when Al Bashir and Desalegn meet, several issues will be put on their table waiting pushing and support of the political will of the two countries. On top of the projects which could achieve economic interest for both countries is providing Sudan with cheap electricity power. Ethiopia has no access to the international waterways and its interests become greater with Sudan through using Port Sudan Harbour. Sudan remains an agricultural state which can provide all the Ethiopian requirements of sugar, edible oil and even wheat if the two countries managed to invest in it to save millions of dollars spent to import this cash crop. Sudan, with its unique relations with both Ethiopia and Eritrea can present itself as a neutral mediator between the two countries to remove any bitterness and resolve the outstanding issues therein. Ethiopia played a considerable role in narrowing the gap of views between Sudan/South Sudan and remained hosting the delegations of the two countries and provides all possible assistance to resolve the disputes. Let us hope that the summit comes out with more fruitful agreements for the benefit of the people of the two nations.
