Editorial:How Your Attitude Determines The Responses You Get From Others In life, beauty, intelligence, physical strength and courage are valid assets to those that have them. They can open doors for an individual, but right or acceptable way of thinking and behavior-attitude is a greater asset, with promises of unimaginable returns in life. . Your actions determine the way people respond to you. In other words, what you get out of life is a function of the kind of relationship you have with people, including the powers that be and the almighty God, who has the unquestionable power to direct any one to help you. Looking around us we can see very pretty young ladies who are having difficulties getting a husband. We also have very hardworking and intelligent people who are not rich. At the root of some of these ironies are attitudinal problems: and until those involved accept responsibility and do something about it, many of those who come their way will only tolerate them. They may not be disposed to going out of their way to lending a helping hand. We are convinced that a man’s attitude determines, to a large extent, what he gets or becomes in life. This is probably the reason why many politicians and other individuals resort to eye service, so that, at all times, their principals can see them as loyal, remember and handsomely reward them when opportunities come. We have also found that what you get from people depends on what you give to them and how they perceive you. When the way of a man is pleasing to others or the powers that be, he gets many things done effortlessly, whether or nor not he is the most qualified. On the other hand, the powers that be can frustrate the deviant; just the same way that God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble. When an individual is not on the same page with higher powers, his efforts will amount to nothing; because, according to the late Moshood K.O. Abiola, one man cannot form a procession. Those who desire to go far in life are also warned that it is impossible to clap with one hand. Attitude, according to the wise is everything: It can make a difference between one man who is abhorred and another who is enjoying tremendous goodwill- whether in politics, sports or any other area of human endeavour. As a matter of fact, most leaders prefer the loyal individual who might not be the most suitable to the most competent- who cannot be trusted. The only way one can enjoy and continue to enjoy the goodwill of a team leader is by being on the same page with the leader. Those who isolate themselves risk suicide, as it is often reported in Japan and other western countries where people tended to be very individualistic, in the absence of the communal spirit. While we agree that a man’s altitude in life is determined by his attitude, we would like to add that when the attitude is repugnant-falls outside the ‘zone of indifference’-, it becomes a disability, greater than physical disability. That was what Scot Hamilton had in mind when he said that. “Bad attitude is the only disability in life”.
