Editorial: Thabo Mbeki and the AUHIP According to news articles the head of African Union High Level Implementation Panel (AUHIP), Thabo Mbeki announced that he will meet with leaders of Darfur armed factions in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on November 22nd, 2014, adding that he will launch a series of negotiations on the write-off Sudan’s foreign debt with British and Italian officials. The current visit of the head of the AUHIP comes within the preparations for the seventh round of talks between the government and the SPLM/N over the two areas which will start on the 12th of current November in Addis Ababa. The AUHIP is planning to arrange for a meeting between the government and the Darfur armed movements to discuss the issue of the regions peace on the light of the DDPD and the annexes to be included in it to allow for those movements participate in power and wealth sharing. It is apparent that Mbeki paved the way for the meeting with the armed movements and got the green light from Doha which is sponsoring the Darfur dialogue to be held the meeting in Addis Ababa. Presidential Assistant Prof. Ibrahim Ghandour, who also met with Mbeki on Tuesday, stated that they have informed Mbeki about the government’s intention to launch negotiations with the SPLM/N. The upcoming round of talks is the seventh as we said on the negotiations over the two areas which continue for two years with achieving any considerable progress and the situation remained standstill. Nevertheless, the AUHIP head believes that the upcoming round will be different considering that searching for settlement over the two areas is linked to the national dialogue project. The AUHIP is confident that linking the national dialogue a way or another with the two areas talks will make the change and meet the demand of the two areas representatives in including their issue within the framework of the comprehensive resolution of the Sudanese issue. The plan set by the AUHIP stipulates that Addis Ababa meeting will discuss the security arrangements and the remaining issues of the protocol on top of which is the popular consultation, besides the cessation of hostilities and humanitarian affairs. The issues of wealth and power sharing will be referred to the national dialogue podium The question that poses itself is will the AUHIP manage to overcome the above challenges despite the reservations surrounding the national dialogue issue? The coming few days will give the reply, so let us wait.
