Education: I don’t think the govt truly cares This is simply incredible! Government bluntly told the striking university lecturers that it could not afford to meet their financial demands. Are we really a serious nation at all? We, especially our leaders, are not bothered that our youths, who ordinarily should be in school, are ‘wasting’ away at home. Instead of being concerned with the state the education sector is, our political leaders are busy making plans and strategising ahead of an election that is two years ahead of us. Does government really care about the future of this country at all? Any sane mind, better still, anyone who truly wants the best for Nigeria, cannot afford to pretend that everything is fine. A few years ago, trillions of naira from our collective patrimony, were used as ‘bailout’ funds for commercial banks ran aground by some greedy people. Again, the entertainment industry, popularly called Nollywood, equally ‘enjoyed’ similar largesse when government released the sum of N3 billion as bailout funds for its smooth operations. With all these, why is it so difficult for government to also give university lecturers their dues? We should know that the future of a nation depends on the level of education acquired by its growing population. It is, therefore, necessary that government meets the demands of the university lecturers and adequate funds allocated to the education sector. However, despite the fact that the university lecturers are right in fighting for their entitlements, they should also consider their students who are bearing the brunt of the strike.
