Education Is Not the Best Gift for Children It was Fionas dinner celebration for her success in her exams. Her dad has always been proud of her. They enjoyed the moment together and had a toast. Fiona my love he called her with the usual sweetness that adds colour to the aura. Yes daddy she answered. He continued Education is the best gift a father can give his child. Im so happy youre taking advantage it He said as he threw his wife a fetching smile to elicit for her agreement. She has been unusually quite that evening. No dad, youre so wrong. Fiona fired back revealing so much enthusiasm. Wrong? he asked. Yes dad, you gave me the best gift even before you knew it. Its responsible for my success in exams Her dad was astonished and was eager to know what that could be. And what exactly is that? Okay, I’ll tell you. But I’ve to get it from my room she said. From your room? Okay I’m patient enough Fiona dashed to her room as he turned to face his wife. At least, join the moment and lets be happy Andrea He said and faced his food. He now calls her by her name. Their marriage has hit a stubborn rock. The two have not been getting along. Good thing they concealed it from their daughter. What sick moment?! Youve been cheating and expect me to be happy with you. You now call me by my name. George, this is not what you promised me Andrea cried. George this time got irritated. For Christ sake! Andrea! Just quit. Well do this some other time when I’m eager He roared.Well I’m eager and ready. Im so sick of your antics. Youre such a nuisance! She yelled back at George. Fine! Im leaving he stood up.Sure, thats what youre good at. I might just tell your daughter why you left when she ask me They noticed Fiona approaching quietly. They relaxed the bitter expression on their faces. Andrea, my love you took so long. So wheres it? George asked his daughter trying hard to pretend things were the way she left. I changed my mind. Ill give it to you on your birthday. Mum are you okay? she inquired. Oh sure, I’m fine Fiona she tried to force out a smile. Two years later. George and Andrea had it burning one morning. They were at loggerhead. The argument tempted them to remove their ring. They fell for it. Fiona picked them up and kept the two together. She already knew what was going on between her parents. Though they still try to hide it. She knew it would lead to estrangement. Her previous results were terribly poor. George and Andrea just dont understand why she is failing so badly. George inquired. Fiona, whats wrong? Your results are not appealing Nothing dad, I’m fine. Honey you can talk to us. Were here for you. You don’t have to be protective. Let it out. We can help Andrea supported. Honestly, mum. Ive no trouble she completed. If all is well with you then why are you coming home with poor results? This is not who you’re. You always surprise me. Education is the best gift ive given you. Why are you not serious like you use to? He asked with a mild harsh delivery and a distorted face a little akin to anger. This time Andrea, threw George a scornful look. Ensuring her daughter didnt notice. Its not the best gift dad she returned to her dad with a similar truncated countenance. Oh yes, the one i gave you when i never knew. The one youve refused to tell me George emphasized. No dad the one youre almost abandoning Fiona couldnt hold back her tears. She darted into her mums embrace and cried. If George felt any penitence or remorse, Andrea didnt show concern. Fiona was on her way to school. She was lost in thought of her parents threatening estrangement. She didnt see the vehicle coming. It knocked her into the gutter. She was rushed to a nearby hospital. George and Andrea arrived just in time. But then, Fiona was in coma. Doctor said she must be transferred to a life support machine. It broke Andreas heart. George was devasted. The driver of the vehicle begged for George audience. He said to him While i rushed your daughter down here. She kept saying something about you destroying the best gift you gave her. She cried in pain while saying this. What could that be? Cos I believe its responsible for her absent-mindedness on the road Honestly I’ve been trying to find out myself George said. Fionas condition further fueled the bitterness between George and Andrea. That night was horrible. That same day was Georges birthday. They battled from the hospital to their home. This time they were close to exchange of fist. George couldnt hold back. He dropped his fist heavily on Andrea. Andrea cried like a child. I despise you. I hate you. I regret ever knowing you. Youre a mistake i wish i never made She cried out these lines. It meant nothing to George. You discovered almost too late. Im sick of your sight. You stink woman! He said as he walked away to Fionas room. Andrea picked her bag and ran away. George discovered her daughter kept a birthday gift for him before her unfortunate accident. Tears trickled down his cheek before he could even touch it. He has discovered how much she meant to him. He opened the gift and saw his wedding ring and Andreas wedding ring enclosed into a letter. As he reads it he felt miserable. Dear Daddy, I promised to share this with you today. Its only the birthday gift I can afford. Loving my mother was the best gift you gave me not education. It made me happy knowing so. It kept me going. Thats why i come home with excellent result. I was so happy with the way you treasured mum. My emotions were balance and i could face my studies. Every night I thank God for the man he gave mum. You. Ive wished, in the near future my husband will be just like you. I just want to thank you for loving mum the way you do. Thank you for being a good husband. Ill tell my kids your story. Mum told me how you met her. The promises you made to her. She told me everything. And everyday she thanks the heavens for you. I feel satisfied knowing all these. And thank you for choosing mum when there were others. Ill tell my kids your story. And if Im ever given a second life to live, I’ll still wait for you to meet mum. So I can be your daughter all over again. I love you and mum loves you more. Happy birthday. Those lines tortured Georges conscience as he realized how much he had done wrong.. He grabbed Fionas picture and engulfed it into his heart. What have I done? Ive killed my own Fiona The letter is drenched with his tears like the heaven opened in Fionas room. He cried out so much regrets and pains. Pouring tears at every sentence. Stabbed at every sweet line. His soul was disturbed as he drowned in his own trauma. Im so sorry Fiona. Im so sorry. I’v had been such a fool. I dont deserve you he cried out. If only she could hear him. The damage is done already. Shes in coma. Her death is almost certain. She cant make it. Can he live with this guilt? For how long? He dashed out of her daughters room in search of his wife. He couldnt find her. Andrea! Andrea where are you! I need you Andrea more than ever He screamed her name. No response. He made his way to the hospital with eyes glistened with tears. He arrived at his daughters bed and saw his wife crying beside her. He stood for a painful moment. His heart broke even more watching the damage he has done. Seeing the lives he has ruined. He walked gently towards Andrea. His eyes were welled up with tears. His lips were vibrating. His heart pounds so hard like it would fall out. He knelt down besides his wife crying and begging for her forgiveness. He fixed her ring back to Andreas finger. I know I’m...I’m the worst person you would want to listen to but please forgive me. Im so sorry. I...I...I re...regret everything I...I... He could barely say everything he had in mind before his wife pulled him into her warm embrace. They both cried and held their daughter. Their tears fell on their daughters face. Fiona, my love, I brought back your gift. How I wish you can hear me That moment Fiona made a movement. Something in form of an energy jumped into her. George saw it and called out for the doctor. The doctor arrived almost immediately and confirmed that Fiona was out of coma. It was a miracle the doctor couldnt understand. He was sure there was no hope for her. There is always hope for the future of children when their father as the head of the family love and keep their mum. The love they can forge together look out for their children. That way theyll excel excellently well in any field. Education is not the best gift for children. Loving and keeping their mother happy is the best gift. Without it youll jeopardize your place in your childrens heart. Lump it or leave it. Its the sheer truth.
