Education/Wisdom Today I stick my neck out. One of the errors of our time has been to believe education makes you wise. Now let me quickly add I believe in education and spent a great deal of this past summer raising funds for scholarships for young men and women in Asia to be able study for a Masters degree. Personally I did go to school ten years beyond high school and completed a doctorate. Forgive my immodesty but my grades were good. Honestly in the end it was all about writing in my case 160 page paper 5 faculty members liked and signed their approval. My observation is education is about knowledge. Wisdom is more about making good decisions that work. Many of the people who changed the world in the last century were college drop outs or average students in college. My friend Dr. Bruce Heilman and one of the wisest men I have ever know while he was president of the University of Richmond commented once he was always good to the A students they would come back and teach. The B students would likely be his physician but he was particular good to the C students because they would go in to business and give him a building at the University. Now let me hasten to add I do know many PH.Ds and M.D.s who are also wise. Wise people care about others. They know what they do not know. They listen to others and learn from them. They learn from life’s experience and when something isn’t working they change what they are doing. When someone points out their mistakes they own them and they thank the person. They compromise to invite everyone into the game. They think but they listen to their gut and trust their feelings. They often live by a code of morality and work ethic that others find hard to believe or do. They trust and believe in the members of the team. They know truth makes us free and sometimes we laugh at them for telling us the truth. All of the world’s religions historically have taught wisdom is a gift of God and to have it one must seek God. I think they are right. Let’s hope and pray we will find and elect around the world wise leaders whither they are educated or not.
