Education goals for Goose Creek Posted: Tuesday, August 19, 2014 12:00 am 0 comments Half a million dollars to buyout the GC schools superintendent would be a small price to pay if it leads to higher student achievement and preparedness. But will it? The Sun reported some of the superintendent’s goals: bond issue approval, keep $100 million in reserves, and meet Texas accountability standards. Should we reward the superintendent for enticing voters to approve large bond issues, hoarding surpluses and meeting watered-down education goals? What about a goal of preparing students to enter college, vocation school, and the job market? Our students are not employed based on Texas standards, but world-class standards. In that regard, the International Comparison of math, reading and science skills among 15-year-olds placed the U.S. 25th in math, tied for 12th in reading with five countries, and 20th in science. Students from South Korea, Japan and China did much better. Who do you think is going to get the high-paying jobs of the future? Also, the 2013 National Assessment of Educational Progress reported that fewer than four out of 10 U.S 12th-graders were prepared for college in critical subject areas. College professors can attest to that. And, we are seeing very little progress nationally. I urge the school board to set meaty goals for the next superintendent that address preparedness of our students based on tests like NAEP and substantive education outcomes. Also, increasing parental involvement in education would be a great place to start. Let us get everyone working together. If we are not making progress preparing our students for college, trade school and the job market, we will suffer much greater consequences than a half million dollar buyout.
