Education is the great engine of personal development. It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that the son of a mine worker can become the head of the mine, that a child of farm workers can become the president of a great nation. It is what we have, not what we are given, that separates one person from another.” – Nelson Mandela 18 July 2014 marks International Mandela Day. Mandela Day was officially declared in 2009 by the United Nations as an annual international day in honour of Nelson Mandela and is celebrated on 18 July each year. The overarching objective of Mandela Day is to inspire individuals to take action to help change the world for the better, and in doing so build a global movement for good. Ultimately it seeks to empower communities everywhere – across Africa and indeed the world! As we all strive to live the Madiba legacy, it is prudent for us to acknowledge the progress that we as Africans have made in realising the ideals that Madiba espoused throughout his long walk to freedom. Whilst many challenges remain, increased opportunities exist which will certainly ensure that the African continent makes great strides in the research and scientific arena in the years ahead. All of us in our individual or institutional capacities can do something not only in honour of Madiba - our hero, but also for the advancement of our communities, countries, continet, and the globe. Start now – practice Mandela Deeds daily: Take action, inspire change and make every day a Mandela Day! Visit mandeladay for more information on how you can support Mandela Day!
