Education over Rims, Weed, and Weave: Back in 1975, Marva Collins started a very successful, the all black, Westside Preparatory School in Garfield Park, a poor neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. She ran the school for more than 30 years but sadly, in 2008, due to a lack of money and community support, Westside Preparatory School closed its doors, due to lack of money for the school. Cynthia Collins, Marva Collins’ daughter, was the headmistress of the School. After the school closed, Cynthia Collins, committed Suicide by Hanging..Many believe that the closing of the school drove her into a Deep Depression...which many believe lead to her Killing Herself - the Suicide. The monthly tuition was only $550 per month. Marva Collins used the a Socratic type method of teaching called The “Collins Method”, which she used in primary school. The first step was to select material with abstract content to challenge students logic, and spark their reading and analytical intellectual skills. It was very successful. Marva Collins graduated thousands of her students and they were placed in jobs and attended colleges around the country, Collins impact on the American school system, and the lives she helped turn around is astounding. Its just unfortunate but so many parents are seeing education as an expense and not an investment, Cynthia Collins, Marva Collins’ daughter and headmistress of the School told JET. I am sure that We spend enough Money on Rims, Weed, and Weave..that if diverted to this valuable School, We could have saved this School and many black lives and many more schools like this... See it is Imperative that, We as Black People, realize that Education is the Most Important Tool for Our Continued Survival... Reading, plus, Critical Thinking develops Analytical Thinking..and Analytical Thinking is the Key to Success in Life. Even if U don’t go to Formal Traditional Schools, We all can Read, and if We can’t Read, We can easily learn to Read, and Encourage Our Kids and Friends to Read. Did U Know that the Tuskegee Experiment could have been prevented if We Would have simply read the World Heath Bulletin that Openly wrote about before it started and while it was going on...but they Knew that Black People Dont Read..thats why they could write about it Openly.
