Type: Perm Full-Time Closing Date: 9/27/2013 Location: Carteret ** POSITION WILL FUNCTION AS EDUCATOR/BIRD TRAINER FOR THE NORTH CAROLINA AQUARIUM AT PINE KNOLL SHORES IN ATLANTIC BEACH, NC ** DESCRIPTION OF WORK: Reporting directly to the Education Curator, this position is responsible for developing and presenting educational programs to the public and aquarium visitors, to school groups and special interest groups. The Educator will present public programs on marine science topics multiple times daily, prepare printed materials, respond to visitor questions, utilize electronic communication systems, and will be responsible for designing and creating new programs incorporating a variety of experiential learning methods including science, arts, theater, and music. This position will also be trained as a presenter for a seasonal free-flight bird program and work with other trainers to provide daily bird care year-round for raptors and shorebirds. Primary job duties include preparing and giving public programs using live animals, designing and coordinating new programs and special events for the public, creating power point presentations and utilizing other A/V equipment; facilitating gallery talks using biofacts and live animals; preparing and presenting age-appropriate curriculum specific to school programs; serving as a resource for teachers and community members, including implementing teacher workshops; evaluating education programs for effectiveness; and training, supervising and evaluating interns, volunteers, and seasonal education staff. This position works cooperatively with other departments to achieve the overall mission of the Aquarium. Evening, weekend and holiday work is required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: 1. Prior experience in developing and presenting effective and engaging public programs in an informal setting in a zoo, aquarium, park, nature center, or museum setting. 2. Prior experience utilizing birds in a public educational program. 3. Demonstrated experience presenting live animals and responding to questions from large audiences. TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in biology, zoology, botany, or other natural science curriculum related to the area of assignment and one year of experience in a natural science field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
