Edward Bassford was one of the leading early architects in Saint Paul. My personal favorite architect Augustus Gauger studied under him. The Paul Martin Mansion and Murray-Lanpher house (pictured here) were both Bassfords, and you can see where a few of Gaugers signature touches came from. For example the dominating corner towers and unique side bays were both carried over into Gaugers designs... The Martin Mansion was built in 1887 and was demolished in the 1970s. The Murray-Lanpher was built in 1886 and still stands today in Irvine Park. (Martin Mansion photograph is from the collections of Christopher J. Keith. All rights reserved 2014.)
