Edward Hoyt Civil War Diary South Carolina January 2, 1865 A fine day but cool air – we remained at anchor till about noon when we went along side the dock and took stores and wounded men and at half past three we put out to sea and we are again on the way north and I did not get a chance to go to camp or even to get my things but I learned that our Regt got back to camp last night – Oh how I did want to see the boys – I saw Lieut Colton and had a few words with him – was very glad to see him. I feel miserable today with the headache. January 3, 1865 A fine pleasant morning with a prospect of a beautiful sail. I feel much better than yesterday. P.M. I am seated on the bow of the forecastle deck and a splendid warm day and still – the boat moves so easily and gracefully it is perfectly charming – they have three sails spread but they hang very lazily so they are about lifeless. Oh how nicely the boat rocks easily as an arm-chair – we are all the world to ourselves – nothing in sight but one sail away to the east of us – old ocean bears us beautifully on at a lovely pace towards the Empire City. We have a splendid boat and this is her first or trial trip – a new boat made for a Hospital boat and has 600 beds for patients – nice and comfortable.
