Edward Hoyt Civil War Diary South Carolina July 16, 1864 It has been a fine day although hot as it will be as a matter of course for a few months now. We have signed the pay rolls today & the pay master will be on hand in the morning. Our Orderly is still living but seems dying by a slow wasting. July 17, 1864 The weather has been fine today & it has been a very quiet & lovely Sabbath but no service today. We get our pay today. We get our increased pay 16 dollars per month from the first of May & it comes very acceptable for the soldier having a family could not support them at present prices on the old wages. I was relieved from trench guard this morning very pleasant last night clear & beautiful moonlight. Orderly Sergant George Crawley died at 6 o.c. this evening from a wound by a piece of a shell during battle on Johns Island the 9th of the present month. July 18, 1864 The weather today has been rather mixed up sunshine & clouds this forenoon a shower at midday & pleasant this afternoon. I have been playing the washer woman today as our washer is sick – done a pretty good days work at it. At 4 o.c. we attended the burial of our Orderly Sergant Geo Crawley & paid him our last respects – he was buried with full martial honor & respect. Erastus Rogers N.C. Wood Wm Van Valkinburgh G Harper Kellog Olmstead & E Hoyt were pall bearers. He now lies with hundreds of his companions who have died in the service of their country & we remain to mourn his loss.
