Edward Hoyt Civil War Diary South Carolina September 7, 1864 Cloudy with a moderate sea wind & quite cool. I was relieved from guard at 9 o.c. as usual & came to camp & found an order awaiting me detailing me as nurse at the Regt Hospital a new thing under the sun & entirely unexpected to me & was ordered to report to the Surgeon forthwith which I did. How long I shall remain here in this capacity as nurse I do not know & whether I shall like it or they like me I do not know but for the time whether long or short I am clear from all guard picket fatigue duty & inspections & all camp duty whatever I suppose. My business is at present to wait on the sick & give their medicine. There are now some 10 or 15 inmates but 3 or 4 that are much sick. I think I shall like it for I dont have to jump & run at every sound of the bugle as there is not even a roll call for me at present nor dress parade no standing on guard in the storm the work will be in doors & I think some better fare but perhaps I shall be better able to judge after being here awhile. September 8, 1864 It was a windy cloudy night & threatened rain but cleared away this morning & has been a very fine cool day. I was on duty at the Hospital for 24 hours from 12 yesterday to 12 today attending to the sick and that after being on picket the night before is rather tough.
