Edward Snowden, Spy or whistleblower? Edward leaked details of several "top-secret" United States and British government mass surveillance programs (against its own citizens) to the press. My take on the "top-secret" aspect is that the classifiers said we better make these programs "top-secret" because the American people will be really really pissed at us if they find out about them... Yup, Edward was a spy who was spying for the American people and he was also a whistleblower who reported that his employer was doing something illegal (in his eyes).
