Effective meeting rules by Todd Dewett Without a clear plan, it’s easy for professionals to gather for an hour or more—yet accomplish nothing. Every great meeting operates within certain parameters defined by a few thoughtful, mutually agreed-upon rules. Here are some to consider: 1. Everyone should arrive on time and be prepared. 2. Clarify the meeting boundaries by stating the goal and defining the scope of discussion. 3. Attendees should be critical, but positive. 4. No interrupting others. 5. No unnecessary use of electronic devices during the meeting. 6. Agree on rules for making decisions. For example, rather than using simple voting techniques, which have winners and losers, strive for consensus through discussion. If consensus is difficult, consider a 70 percent rule: if someone’s 70 percent in agreement, then they agree to support a decision. 7. Impose simple and even fun penalties for breaking these rules—like having to put a dollar in the team’s lunch fund if they’re late.
