Efficiency of movement That horse moves like a jungle cat. Reach out of the shoulder, sweep of the hocks under the body, springy, elastic use of the entire body through the back, all these are traits of movement so desired by breeders, trainers and riders. It starts with genetics, and can be helped or hindered by training. The apple doesn`t fall far from the tree is an apt saying. A bad mover---choppy, crooked, short, labored--- bred to a similarly bad mover is unlikely to produce that panther way of slinking across the ground in a seemingly effortless float. But a soft, elastic rider, with a good store of patience and tact can help an average mover become at least a nice mover, whereas a hard handed bully can destroy the innate ability of the most gifted mover. So, if having a good mover is a riding goal, be aware that there`s only so much even the finest riders can do to enhance what a horse brings at birth. Start with lovely gaits, and learn to understand this saying---If you want your horse to move like a panther, YOU have to move like a panther.
