Egg binding, or dystocia, refers to a medical condition where the female is unable to lay an egg she has formed; it is not uncommon among reptiles, and can be fatal to both the eggs and the female. Turtles will fail to lay their eggs for several reasons, including metabolic disorders, anatomical defects, dehydration, malnutrition, stress, abnormal eggs, infection, or lack of a suitable nesting site. Clinical signs are few, but can include depression, labored breathing and straining. Treatment may involve simply providing the correct environmental nesting conditions, or hormonal injections, or surgery. This turtle was lucky, after 2 oxytocin injections she laid all fifteen of her eggs!
