Egypt, after all: (1/5) …meanwhile, in Darb al Ahmar, celebrations for the Moulid of Fatma al Nabaweya, the grand-daughter of the Prophet, daughter of Hussein. Here are a couple of videos from last night - with Nagwa Hassaan who shot this video. The Moulid is celebrated by people of the area, but also attracts Sufis from all over Egypt. We met Abdo and Hussein from Belbeis, who took us to a smaller zikr (rememberance of God) in an alley off the colourful “heesa zeeta & zambaleeta” main square – with swings, funny hats, kids and lots of people trying to make money. There is something for everyone at a Moulid - teenagers DJ-ing, cotton candy, vendours of Chinese plastic toys, spiderman and santa-masks, women doing doing “zaghratta”, swings for kids, and the more spiritual zikr gatherings. These “birthday parties” for Muslims “saints” are controversial, rowned upon by orthodox Sunnis, especially Wahhabis who call this supersticious blasphemy and idolatry. The Sufis themselves talk of tolerance, love and mercy.
