Eight Days at Shady Gap Peggy Ann Could Not Get Back The Mountain Man Took her away Eight long days, she had to stay I came across a really unusual find today at the PA Music Expo in Lancaster. Those of you old enough to remember may recall the 1966 kidnapping and disappearance of 17-year old Peggy Ann Bradnick at the hands of William Diller Hollenbaugh, known by locals as “Bicycle Bill”, “Bicycle Pete”, or simply, “The Mountain Man”. Peggy Ann was abducted shortly after she and her siblings stepped off their school bus on the afternoon of May 11. What ensued was, at the time, the largest manhunt in Pennsylvania history. Six days into the search, FBI agent Terry Anderson was shot and killed by Hollenbaugh, whose familiarty with the densely wooded area gave him an advantage over law enforcement. Cambria County Deputy Sheriff Francis Sharpe was also shot and taken hostage during the pursuit, but survived. The events of that day eerilly bring to mind the current news involving Eric Frein. Some reports indicate the Mountain Man was gunned down by 15-year old Larry Rubeck, who allegedly shot the kidnapper with a hunting rifle as Hollenbaugh approached the family’s front porch. Although PA State police were later credited with firing the fatal shots, Rubeck was quoted at the time as saying, “I’m a hunter. I’ve killed animals, but I just don’t know how I feel about this...I’m glad the girl is all right and I’m glad it’s over.” Later in the year, country singer Russ Edwards released “Eight Days At Sha-de Gap”, a song co-written by David White, of Danny & The Juniors, best known for writing the rock & roll anthem, “At The Hop”. youtu.be/XDo37aZWaiY
