Eight locations identified for 50, 000 acre-strong land bank for industry in Odisha but no place for Mayurbhanj district: With several big ticket projects, including the proposed Posco steel plant near Paradip, facing land hurdle, the Odisha government has identified eight locations across the state to create a 50,000-acre strong land bank to expedite work on projects stalled due to non-availability of land.Odisha The government has identified land in the areas of Dhamra region in Bhadrak and Balasore districts, Paradip region in Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur districts, Bhubaneswar region in Khordha and Nayagarh district, Gopalpur region in Ganjam district, Sambalpur-Jharsuguda region, Sundargarh- Rourkela region, Dhenkanal-Angul region and Koraput-Rayagada-Kashipur region, said a senior official of Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation of Odisha Ltd (IDCO). Many industries have already been set up while the projects of Tata, Nalco, IOCL, Posco India, JSW, JSPL and Vedanta are proposed to be set up in these eight locations.Since there are vast stretches of un-surveyed land in these regions, which can be utilised for creation of land bank, chief secretary GC Pati has advised all the departments concerned to record the land and bring them to revenue record through Boundary Change Proceedings (BCP), said the official.IDCO, the nodal land acquisition agency of the state, has been asked to identify the patches and move the district Collectors for creation of land bank in the state. Many large and small companies are facing inordinate delays in setting up their projects in the state following local opposition to land acquisition. Some like Tata and JSPL have begun construction of their plants in a phased manner on whatever area could be secured, while others like South Korean steelmaker Posco is still struggling to set up its project even nine years after signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the state government. Arcelor Mittal had to abandon its plan to set up a steel plant in Keonjhar district primarily due to problems in land acquisition. However, Odisha is still among the top three states in the country in investment attracted during the last decade. Interestingly Mayurbhanj district having no industries is yet to be listed by the state. It seems the policy makers of the state machinery have forgotten the cause of Mayurbhanj to make it at par with the developed belt of the state. The district of Mayurbhanj is having the largest tribal population among 30 districts of Odihsa where the tribal people maigrate to other states for better livelihood.
