Eighth grader Haleigh Prosser, from Colorado, recently told Drover CattleNetwork, about her latest research project about seeing if supplementing Vitamin C to beef cattle fed distillers grains would impact their overall weight gain. Her project was: ‘C’ the Difference: Effects of Vitamin C in Cattle Fed Wet Distillers’ Grains.” Two groups of related cattle were fed and one group received an injection of vitamin C. The cattle continued on their feeding ration with distillers grains for 44 days. The cattle were weighed in the beginning and at the end of the test, and a 50 difference was seen between the two groups of cattle. There was also a .28 pound difference in the two groups average daily gain. The cattle that received vitamin C went from a weight of 2,750 to a weight of 3,100, with each steer gaining 87.5 pounds in 44 days. When looking at daily gain, each steer that received vitamin C gained about 1.98 pounds per day. The cattle that did not have supplemental vitamin C went from a weight of 2,650 to a weight of 2,950. Each steer gained 75 pounds in the 44 days, which equals a 1.7 pound average daily gain.
