Eintracht Frankfurt’s Sebastian Rode will join Bayern Munich in the summer on a free transfer, the club has announced. The 23-year-old has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich for a long time and has now put pen to paper on a four year deal. “I’m very pleased that this transfer has worked out,” he told Bayern’s official website. “Bayern is the next big step for me. I want to develop here and win a load of titles with my future team-mates.” Sporting director Matthias Sammer hailed his professionalism and enthusiasm for the game. “Sebastian Rode is an excellent professional, he embodies the highest level of professionalism and dynamism,” he said. “I’m certain he will give our team plenty of momentum and enthusiasm to tackle obstacles in the future.” Given that Bayern Munich already have an embarrassment of riches with the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger, Javi Martinez, Mario Gotze, Thiago Alcantara, Toni Kroos and even Philip Lahm who can all play in central midfield, what does Rode’s signing say for the future of Kroos? Schweinsteiger is certainly not going to leave the club he has spent his entire career at, Pep Guardiola swoons over Thiago while the likes of Martinez, Gotze and Lahm are all integral players in the Bayern Munich side. How is signing yet another central midfielder going to convince Kroos that Bayern Munich see him as an important player in their side? Rode may well end up being Kroos’ replacement.
