The secret one of Jegbes house It is Agbagiwo who is the chief priest of divination In the Heavenly abode Ifa said, Look at Orunmila The day he was coming to the earth from heaven They told him he would marry a woman They said the woman would deliver children Two children in a day Just like Ifa predicted Orunmila had a wife She was pregnant and delivered twins One was male while the other was female From the tender age, they both Watched their father in the act of divination Just as the male could divine So could the female divine When human beings Got to the earth to live, the diviners Said, You Awawonlaseri Your child does not practice Ifa He answered and said, She is female They told him that is no taboo So long as Orunmilas firstborn child Who is female studied Ifa From then on women have studied Ifa They prescribe sacrifice and they are initiated into the Ifa corpus. True women in Ifa are not cursing you in spirit possession or in public but are working to heal the communities of the world. They are educators, healers, doctors, nurses, writers, activist, psychologist, homemakers and the list is inexhaustible for they are the working back bone of our tradition of Ifa and Orisa. They are also the last house on the block that people go to for divination and spiritual work in our communities because of the social and cultural adverse structures of misogyny and hostility that have been set up by some but not adhered to by all; which is so unlike those cultures that are in fact philogynous admiration for women. This is a work in progress of change, which may also be the role of women in Ifa and in order to fulfill it we must seek other avenues and means to address this issue. They are looked to for information on the how do to this or that but then they are often overlooked and alienated by the very people that they help. They are disqualified when jealousy approaches and cried to when things go wrong in the many lives. Yet, she the Iyanifa, Iyalowo, Iyalaje and the many other positional titles that one may hold when one who is a woman in Ifa who has elevated by her knowledge and acumen as a priest in Ifa. She is always studying and improving her craft and is increasingly curious and active in her pursuit of knowledge, understanding and wisdom of Ifa and Orisa. She is kind and caring but can when walking in the spirit of her Orisa can be stern but never in a mean spirited way. One where the severity of the circumstances are told to you in divination and the emphasis must be given in truth so that you as the client/godchild/ knows the severity and action needed for change. You will not accost you on the mat and will serve Ifa with dignity and grace. Above she can and will be as she grows in her spiritual development the embodiment of true Ifa which at the end of the day is love in all its forms good, bad and the ugly... Ifa gbe a wa O!
