Ekiti court dissolves 15-year-old marriage An Ado-Ekiti Customary Court on Monday dissolved a 15-year-old marriage between Margaret Ojo and her husband, Bamidele. The case first came up for mention on Feb. 10. The marriage was dissolved on grounds of frequent fighting, lack of respect for the family and lack of care for the wife and the children by her husband. Margret, 37, said whenever her husband asked for money from her, and she refused to give him, it would result into serious beating, which was often settled by her parents. The mother of four told the court that there was a time she was duped by her husband and his friends, and when asked for the refund, the husband beat her. According to her, it is not in the character of her husband to give her parents money as an in-law, but she usually gives or sends money to her husbands parents, and even buy them clothes. She claimed that her husband had no respect for her family, saying there was a time he attempted to rape her half-sister when she was not around. But Bamidele, 41, told the court that he never beat his wife. He said that on many occasions the wife failed to cook for the children, which he did instead, adding that he had been giving his wifes family members the respect they deserved from him. Bamidele said he had been doing his best for his wife and children with the little salary he earned and also made extra-ordinary efforts to meet their needs. The president of the court, Mr Joseph Ogunsemi, in his judgment, observed that the marriage had broken down irretrievably and consequently dissolved it. Ogunsemi awarded the custody of the first three children to the husband, and that of the last child to Margret. He said that both parents should be responsible for the payment of their childrens school fees. He also ordered that the husband should be paying the sum of N1, 000 as monthly upkeep allowance for the last child. The court president also grants both parents the access to their children.
