El Potrero Chico. Originally I had thought it to be a rather care-free, benign destination, filled with mellow, mini-big wall sport climbs followed by delicious food and lots of margaritas. While I was accurate about the food, it became very clear that this is not a place to be taken lightly. On par with places like Yosemite Valley or RMNP, the climbing is burly, scary and very heads up, at all times. Sure, its bolted and often rather well, but it takes a traditional climbers mentality to ascend to the highest points on the jagged limestone walls and descend as safely as possible. Even before all hell broke loose on our final two days of this trip, we had shifted our mentality towards the place and realized just how out there you can truly be. This shot from New Years Day of Paul Creme on the 11th pitch of Yankee Clipper, a 13-Pitch 5.10b (or 15p 5.12a!) shows just how out there it can be climbing in the clouds, amongst the cactus and Palm trees, over a thousand feet off the deck. It was wild. Alton Richardson Media
