Elaine Petrilla, Miami Friends Meetings FCNL rep, and Kathy Hersh, member of Miami Friends, met today with Alyn Fernandez, South Regional Director, and Lea Padron, Special Assistant, in Senator Marco Rubios Miami office. Our intention was to establish ongoing communication regarding concerns about immigration and global warming. We talked for almost an hour, acquainting them with Quakers and FCNL and listening to the woes of trying to create bipartisan support for immigration reform. There are currently 300 children from Central America in Miami being enrolled in the school system. Groups coordinating help are Catholic Charities, Boystown, and His Town. Sen. Rubio met with the Presidents of Guatemala and Honduras and the Foreign Minister of El Salvador re the children on the border. Sen. Rubio supports changes in the law which would expedite the childrens swift return to their native lands which, of course, sounds perfectly rational except for the fact that returning these children could be akin to signing their death warrants. The current law requires a legal hearing and human treatment in the interim. On the issue of global warming, Senator Rubio has taken positions we dont agree with. We hope he will see the Light. We left a candle and a card with Gandhis exhortation to Be the change…
