Elder Dallin H. Oaks highlighted the fact that not all good choices in life are of equal worth. There are many commendable actions that are not the best choice , even though they are acceptable choices. Yet it is the nature of most human beings to misprioritize, occasionally placing good things before the best things. Elder Oaks said , I have never known of a man who looked back on his working life and said, ‘I just didn’t spend enough time with my job.] Spending quality and quantity time with children is one of the best ways we can use our sacred and limited time. Being there to listen; to understand what they are experiencing; to reassure them when they are discouraged; and to support them when they face trials or rejection, or experience shattered dreams— these are the things that matter most. A ball game on TV, pursuing a promotion at work, or spending time on a hobby are all moral and respectable pursuits. But they must never come before our sacred responsibilities to spouse and children. The “best” use of our time necessarily places our families above our professional or personal interests. What single worldly accomplishment could ever hold a candle to drying the tear of a son or daughter— or shedding a tear with them ? What personal accolades are more worthy of celebrating above the accomplishments of a child or grandchild? Encouraging and comforting; praising and teaching; playing and praying— these are the things of which memories are made. There is so much good we can do— good of an eternal nature— when we look beyond ourselves and toward those who God has entrusted to our care.
