Elderly couple, down on their luck, found living in car Posted: Sep 10, 2014 10:37 PM EDT Updated: Sep 10, 2014 10:40 PM EDT By: Michael Shingleton, FOX 13 News - bio HUDSON (FOX 13) - A couple in their 70s, down on their luck, is living in their car in a Pasco County Walmart parking lot -- but not by choice. Thanks to a group of girls, theyre slowly getting back on their feet. Dee Head, her husband Gordon, and their three dogs have been in that lot for several weeks. Everything is kind of hitting us at one time, Gordon said. They had been living in Texas until early August when Gordon took a construction supervisor job in The Villages. I was promised a job working on a hospital. Im a master plumber by trade, Gordon said. They packed everything up, drove a few days, but the job fell through. We were devastated because we have never had to do such a thing, Dee explained. The couple does not have savings, Gordon said he cant access his VA retirement benefits, and they are drawing Social Security. But the payments are not enough to get into a more permanent place to stay. Monday night, Brandi Dussing, her sister and some friends were grocery shopping and noticed the couple sleeping in their car. Brandi knocked on the window and offered to buy them food. Gordon declined, saying they did not want to accept a handout. But the girls wouldnt have it, and insisted on feeding them and the three dogs. It just felt like the right thing to do, Dussing said. One of them decided to post the Heads story to social media for all their friends to see. Its the first time Ive seen Facebook put to good use, Dussing said. Their story has been shared hundreds of times. The girls set up a donation page to help get the couple back on their feet, and theyre looking for someone to temporarily foster their dogs until they do so.
