Elected officials in Seattle always engage in hand-wringing about how the Republicans in Olympia (and Tim Eyman) have made it virtually impossible for municipalities to enact progressive revenue measures. Well, here is one clear opportunity for the city to use a more progressive avenue to avert the cuts to Metro. Councilmember Nick Licata and I have put forward a proposal in which the revenues that would be raised by the sales tax increase would instead be raised by a combination of a very modest tax on businesses per employee, and an increase in the commercial parking tax. The question is, how come the hand-wringers are not behind this progressive idea? Please come to the Transportation Benefit District public hearing in City Hall Chambers at 5:30PM Thursday June 26 to demand that the city government use the progressive option. Arrive early to sign up to speak.
