Election commentary By Mike Rhodes Community Alliance newspaper editor It looks like the elections department has counted 5,499 new ballots to arrive at the new election result of: No: 28,271 Yes 28,078 There had been 8,100 ballots uncounted on Tuesday, about 6,000 were late mail-in ballots and 2,100 were provisional ballots. According to The Fresno Bee in this mornings paper, the election department’s plan was to count the late mail in ballots first. That is where the 5,499 new votes came from - the late mail in ballots. That leaves the 2,100 provisional ballots yet to be counted. Conventional wisdom, among those who follow electoral politics closely, says that most of the provisional ballots will trend toward NO. The reason for that, they say, is that it is more likely that someone in a neighborhood south of Shaw Avenue will end up using a provisional ballot. Voters south of Shaw traditionally vote more progressively than those north of Shaw. If the gurus of electoral politics are correct, then the NO vote will only grow as more provisional ballots are counted. The only thing left for Mayor Swearengin and the Yes on G group to do is try to stop or delay the vote and disqualify as many ballots as possible. Victory is ours!
