Election day was the first day I did not hear back from her. We had dated for such a brief period of time, that I felt like an idiot thinking it was uncharacteristic of her to not pick up her cellphone- but she had always been there, so present. I felt such adolescent despair that I dialed her home number, and to my relief -and my surprise- she picked up. With a heavy voice and a mysterious angle, she suggested that we would not be seeing each other anymore. That, at the moment, she was not at liberty to explain why. Are you moving away? - I asked to ask anything. For the first time I experienced how a silence gets to mean yes, before a truthless no creeps in.
