Election is an act of mercy by the divine hand of God, a work in spite of a sinful human nature, an adoption as a son or daughter in spite of rebellion, a friendship forged in spite of an ongoing hatred of God and the beginning of a purging of the human soul of everything that is contemptible within man by the work of Christ on the cross and the continued work of the Spirit in our very hearts. The glory of Gods grace is that it takes haters and makes them worshipers. This is something we give God glory and honor for, not something we hold over other people. I didnt choose to be chosen. I didnt choose to have Gods grace capture me. If anything, I chose a path that lead to hell. All else is God and to His glory for ever and ever. Let me make this very, very clear. If you chose God - if Salvation relies upon you, your decisions, your free will, a repentance based upon your own emotion and logic - then you are far better equipped with understanding, or are more perfect, or are closer to God, or are a number of other things better than the man who stands next to you who goes to hell. You have something other than the cross to boast in, and this puts you in grave, grave danger. Your theology is then you-centered, not cross-centered. You make yourself then point in which Gods glory terminates. You have zero security in the cross because unlike God who is unchanging, does not go back on His word, does not return on His promises, and does not ever forsake His own - you cannot say the same. You break your promises, you take what isnt given, you go back on your word daily. If your salvation is dependent on your decisions, you cannot claim the same unchangeablity of God - you are an inconsistent and broken being. We ought to think honestly about what our personal theology says about the God we worship and what it says about us. If we have more rights than God does to His own creation and if we diminish the power of the cross by placing all ability upon ourselves, we do the Lord a disservice. -Robb Goodell
