Election summary from CalTravel! Predictions from even the most reliable of sources for Tuesday’s General Election didn’t come close to what many are now calling a Republican sweep – nationally and within California. On the federal level, Republicans saw a gain of 7 Senate seats, 13 House seats and 3 governorships. Now in control of both the House and Senate, we anticipate Republicans will tackle controversial issues such as the Affordable Care Act, immigration and taxes. In the Golden State, Republicans broke through Democrat’s hard-fought supermajority secured in 2012. A supermajority (54 in the Assembly, 27 in the Senate) allows a party to raise taxes, pass urgency legislation (which takes effect immediately), and qualify ballot measures without the other party. After accounting for redistricting and vacant seats, Democrats started this election cycle with 27 seats in the Senate and 55 in the Assembly. If this morning’s results hold, they will now hold 26 seats in the Senate and 52 seats in the Assembly. However, Republican’s sweep stopped just short of the eight statewide Constitutional officers including Governor, Attorney General, School Superintendent, Insurance Commissioner and Treasurer, among others. Governor Brown’s victory also extended to two initiatives on the ballot – Proposition 1 (water bond) and Proposition 2 (rainy day fund). Voters also approved changes to California’s sentencing laws (Proposition 47) and struck down changes to health insurance rates (Proposition 45), medical malpractice lawsuit limits (Proposition 46) and a casino agreement for the North Fork Rancheria Band of Mono Indians (Proposition 48).
