Elections... Seriously, politicians often mean well at the beginning, but soon learn to get anything done they have to do deals. Its a slippery slope. Anyone see the TV series House of Cards? The problems in my opinion with politicians are 1) They get jaded from the world of politics and become complacent to not rock the boat. many professions harden after a long career as a prosecutor, criminal defense attorney, police ofice or Judge. It wears on you how hard it is to make a difference. 2) Many are self serving, ego maniacs or get corrupted, seek attention, power or money, putting their own self interest before the public good. Everyone needs to feel important, for many politicians its their 15 minutes of fame. A possible solution, IMHO, is if successful business people; who dont need any power or money and have them run the government like a business and not a tangled web of favors and no regard for what happens once they are gone. About about 6 or 7 years ago I tried to get the City to do 2 things: 1) Join with some south side business owners to put cameras around the southside that could record EVERY car entering or leaving any subdivision. This could have resulted in solid evidence and arrests minutes after a crime was reported. It also could have prevented many crimes. The Mayor and City manager refused to meet with me. This would have cost the City zero. 2) Invest in properties on Abercorn and other popular areas that have buildings that need almost no rehab and would appreciate in value for future profits to the City. Michael Brown dropped that ball when he hired an idiot as an appraiser, instead they (TAX PAYERS) lost money on the Island construction and purchased the disaster shopping center, then finally spent millions more building. Our police deserve better. Rochelle Small-Toney refused to meet with me on both of these subjects and also on proof I had on the lack of care for our trees. That didnt turn out well for the City either. The City leaders still need to listen to truth about the fact we have no systematic and written preventative maintenance plan for out aging trees, but I digress. My point is the City has many successful business folks who love our city, know how to run an entity and have no hidden or personal agendas. When you want to muscle up you dont hire the most out of shape trainer at the gym. Many of our politicians have no experience in leadership or business success. Maybe a team of Savannah folks including people like OC Welch, Greg Parker ... would lead Savannah to a better future. Well nobody asked for my opinion... Merry Christmas! Happy Hanukka! and Happy New Year!
