Electric lawn mowers have come a long way and can be lighter and stronger than they used to be. In addition, they help avoid problems that can arise with using a gasoline with ethanol in it. When a gasoline-powered lawn mower fails to start after a small amount of fuel is left in the tank during storage, the damage can be costly to fix. Now may be the time to buy a cordless electric mower that runs on lithium-ion batteries and can take on thick grass. Having to mow grass regularly is one of the few downsides to life in the spring and summer. It’s not the sweat or the exercise, although the sun can be punishing. The worst part is having to maintain and contend with a cranky gas-powered lawn mower. Here is a story too many homeowners can relate to: I bought a new mower just last year; used it three times . But this year when I pulled it out of storage, it never turned over. My almost-new lawn mower, recently paid for — and without one nick, ding or scratch — was unable to rise to the occasion this year after I topped it off with gas, checked the oil and yanked the starter rope repeatedly. Mockingly, a still-pristine label plastered across the front proclaimed “Guaranteed to Start!” So I put it away. A day or two later, I approached a clerk at the store where I had bought it and told him my sad tale. Only then did I learn the ethanol Uncle Sam has us using in our cars is apparently not very kind to lawn mower engines. It fouls the insides, turning rubber tubing and gaskets into an evil, gooey glop that creates havoc inside the engine. The first question was ‘Did you leave any gas in it from last year?”. Of course. That was the problem. And ethanol fuel damage is not covered by any warranty. The cost to repair is usually around $200-$250 to rebuild the unit and replace everything from the gas tank to the carburetor to the head gasket. Do you want to spend $200-$250 to fix a $300 mower with a now-worthless $60 extended warranty. Consider getting an electric mower. But there are electric lawn mowers now with no extension cords, that runs off a pair of lithium-ion batteries. These all-electric mowers also don’t quit in thick grass either. They needs no ethanol, no oil, no spark plugs, no extension cords and you NEVER have to crank on it to get it to start. Out of the box, it took five minutes to assemble.
