Elementary Parents: Many of you have expressed concerns over the Summer Reading/Math Assignments over the course of the past two days. The assignment was communicated at the end of the year; however it could have been communicated earlier and through a wider variety of means. Ive spent a portion of today reflecting deeply on suggestions from a variety of parent groups and your childs teachers to determine how to proceed. A great many students did complete the assignments as requested, and I feel it would marginalize their efforts and hard work to discount the assignments completely. Several more of you were traveling and I prefer not to penalize any student for what clearly could have been communicated earlier. Additionally, there was some challenges in regards to being able to access Study Island and Scootpad. Given all pertinent information, the following adjustments are being made to the Summer Reading/Math Assignments effective immediately: Summer Reading Assignment: Students who turn in the original reading assignment by Wednesday, August 13 will receive a classwork grade for completion. Students who turn in reading logs documenting reading over the summer from any books by Friday, August 15 will receive a homework grade for completion. Students who did not complete any reading of any kind and do not submit any documentation by Friday, August 15, will receive a zero grade for homework. Summer Math Assignment Students who did any work toward mastery of math concepts may submit workbooks or worksheets for extra credit by Friday, August 15. Teachers will check Study Island and Scootpad for any work completed during June/July. Students who did not complete any math work over the summer will not be penalized. I want to thank each of you who gave input. Your feedback will be valuable as I work with teachers on next summers assignments and the timing of their release.
