Elementary school students win Egg Bowl tickets By Elizabeth Googe | WTVA | November 11, 2014 CORINTH, Miss. (WTVA) -- In a room packed with fellow students first grader Tatum Horne wasnt expecting the surprise of her life. The Alcorn Central Elementary student was announced as one of the two winners of the Read Your way to the Egg Bowl contest. The contest was held by the Mississippi Association of Educators, and is aimed at motivating children to read. It certainly paid off for two students. I like to read and I learn new stuff when I read, said Horne. The other winner, fourth grader Ryan Thomas comes from Wheeler Elementary School. The prize for Wheeler and Horne are three tickets to the Egg Bowl, and how badly did Thomas want that prize? Really bad, he said. The two lucky winners were picked at random, but to even qualify students had to read at least six books. Students could choose to read for either Ole miss or Mississippi State. According to MAE President, Joyce Helmick, whichever school students chose its a win-win for teachers. What this contest has brought to them in their schools is that teachers have had the opportunity to get students excited about reading, Helmick said. Fifteen thousand students across the state participated in the contest. Helmick says that students have gone above and beyond the requirements. Weve had many teachers whove said the students read six, but they wanted to read more so we just kept and kept going, she added. Whoever comes out on top as the winner of the Egg Bowl, Horne and Thomas will be gladly cheering on from the sidelines. https://youtube/watch?v=VU3VCNLjOj4&feature=youtu.be
