Elephant Fact Advent Calendar - 22 When baby elephants are first born, instincts kick in and they search for their mothers milk. The mother elephant will guide the baby elephants mouth to the milk with her trunk and help the baby to understand what to do. Although they can find the milk and learn how to suckle very quickly, they dont really know what to do with their trunks. They swing them around, stand on them, trip up over them and produce high pitched trumpeting sounds through them. They also suck their trunks in the same way that human babies suck their thumbs. When they reach 6 months old they start to learn and understand how to use their trunks for the purposes of eating and drinking. And by the time they are one year old they manage to use their trunks with more control and dexterity.
