Elgin Museum and Lord Elgin: We have just had a letter from the Earl of Elgin and Kincardine, donating two of his John Henning drawings. They have been on display in the Museum for the past ten years, with the Henning miniature plaster casts of the Parthenon frieze. The 7th Earl commissioned plaster models of the sculptures to be made by his formatori: the lone bearded man with his horse is on the West Frieze, still in Athens. When the Ephor of the Acropolis, in 1994 asked for help from the British Museum to reconstitute the by then disintegrating West Frieze, the British Museum was able to refer to the material from the original models. The Museum is most grateful for this generous donation and lasting link with the Elgin marbles.
