Elgin point pleases new boss Weir... ELGIN City drew 1-1 with leaders Arbroath to get new boss Jim Weir off to a decent start on Tuesday night. Supersub Craig Gunn netted just 30 seconds after coming off the bench to rescue a point for the Moray men in Weir’s first game in charge. The new manager said: “We got what we deserved in the end. I’m delighted we got a reaction at half time and showed more self belief the longer the game went on. “Arbroath are top of the league and they are an excellent side. We are where we are for a reason, the table doesn’t lie. “We just need to make ourselves a hard team to beat and we did that tonight.” Before the match a minute’s applause was heard in honour of Innes MacDonald, Elgin’s head coach during their glory days of the sixties, who passed away the previous day. City’s fine display on the night was a fitting tribute to the legendary former Elgin Academy teacher, who helped create a great chapter in the club’s history. New manager Weir handed a first home start to 16-year-old Rory MacEwan, while top scorer Gunn and kidfield pair Archie Macphee and Daniel Moore were on the bench. With MacEwan looking lively, City took the game to the leaders and it took a good stop by away keeper Marc McCallum to keep out a Shane Sutherland deflected drive. McCallum also saved well from Mark Nicolson before Arbroath went in front against the run of lay through a Simon Murray strike on 33 minutes. Graeme Beveridge struck the bar as City chased an equaliser, while Darryl McHardy missed two headed chances and veteran Dennis Wyness miscued a header from inside the six yard box. Gunn replaced Beveridge on 76 minutes and almost immediately brought the scores level, controlling a Brian Cameron cross with his first touch of the game and firing the ball home with his second. Elgin looked capable of grabbing a winner though they relied on a fine save by Michael Fraser in stoppage time to earn them a point. Weir and assistant boss Gavin Price face their next tough task when they visit promotion chasing Albion Rovers on Saturday.
