Elias sails through to Round of 16 Peruvian sensation Diego Elias sailed through to the Round of 16 after he dismissed his two opponents in his two games on Tuesday with ease, after he got a bye on the opening day of the World Junior Squash Championships in Windhoek, Namibia. Elias, a hot favourite to take the junior title for the individual men, first took the scalp of James Evans from England, winning in straight sets, 11-3 11-6 11-4, before he dismantled Colombia’s Andres Felipe Herrera, also in straight sets, 11-5, 11-2, 11-2. Elias, in both matches was supreme with tricky shots and at times classy to the delight of the spectators who gathered in numbers at the new all-glass court – a first for Namibia. Before meeting Elias, Herrera defeated India’s Vijay Kumar Meena of India in a tightly contested match that translated into 11-1 9-11 11-7 3-11 11-8. However, there was an upset after South Africa’s Laurence Kuhn downed Daniel Poleshchuk (5/8) of Israel 6-11 11-8 11-6 11-8. Egyptian junior women champion, Nour-el-Sherbini and also a favourite to make it through to the finals, only comes on court for her first match against South Africa’s Kacey-Leigh Dodd [9/16] on Wednesday. There were mixed results in other matches, with the host country losing all their matches in both the men and women individuals. Niklas Becher of Germany was too strong for Le-Hugo Van Rooyen of Namibia with a score of 11-3 11-7 11-3 , while Israel’s Noam Peer defeated Carel Olivier of Namibia in straight sets 11-1 11-3 11-5. Lynette Vai, the only player from that country, won her game against Lida-Marie Calitz of Namibia also in straight sets (NAM, 11-1 11-0 11-3), while Nele Hatschek of Germany was too good for Daniela Scriba, also winning in straight sets (11-4 11-6 11-3).
