Elijah So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed by him, and cast his mantle upon him 1 King 19:17-19, emphasis added. In 1 King 19 God spake to Elijah and makes it clear that his successor is to be Elisha, so Elijah goes and finds Elisha and casts his mantle on him. Elijah recognizes the call of God on his life and leaves everything to follow Elijah. When Elijahs ministry is over, the anointing that comes to rest on Elisha is that of Elijah and Elijahs mantle ( 2 King 2:8, 13-15. ). Many believe that Elijahs mantle was symbolic of the power of prayer that Elijah had saturated it with.
