Elise Christie is a genuine hope for Britain’s first-ever Olympic gold medallist in short track speed skating - a sport that has been described as Carnage on Ice. Fans of the sport will remember long track star Trevor Marsicanos horrific injury during a race in 2004. The US speed skater suffered a gruesome gash in his leg that was spurred by another skater’s blade. While splayed on the ice, Marsicanos thigh bone was visible, and nearly 50 percent of his body’s blood volume surged out. Christie herself had a scare in Russia in November last year when she crashed heavily when a rival’s skates cut her right leg during a World Cup race.
