Elissa and I took a nice trip yesterday; we visited the national Navy SEAL museum in Fort Pierce. What an AMAZING place! Some of the displays and descriptions gave us chills - literally. And some of the displays, with descriptions of acts of valor and self-sacrifice, gave us reason to weep - literally. To say we were moved would be an understatement. It all started with a day at the pool here where we met two lovely women and started a conversation. One of the women mentioned that her husband volunteers at the museum and if we decided to go, we should go on a day hes there and hell give us a special tour. That led to her sharing with us the following: Her husbands brothers story is displayed there at the museum, hes a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient. His story is amazing; its the epitome of the definition of honor and courage (as are each and every story of CMOH recipients, we just happened to get to hear a personalized version of this mans story). If you get a chance, Google the name of Theodore R. Norris - Congressional Medal of Honor recipient. Youll discover that not only did he receive the CMOH for his actions in rescuing a downed pilot who was trapped behind enemy lines, he was also involved in another incident where the CMOH was awarded; this time HE was the one being rescued after he was shot and left for dead behind enemy lines (where he lost an eye and part of his skull). And youll find out that after a number of surgeries over a period of six years, he convinced the director of the FBI to waive his physical disabilities (including eye sight) in order to join. He would end up serving 20 years in the FBI before retiring in 1999. The citation for the CMOH is in the comment section directly below this post. May we all have a day where we find a way to honor those whove sacrificed so much for us.
