Elizabeth Gilbert was asked on a thread, How do I begin to love myself? and replied with this tip I like to share with clients also: Do you have a photograph of yourself when you were tiny and innocent? This is how I started: With a picture of me when I was about four years old, and adorable, and beyond reproach. Who would ever attack a small and tender being like that? Find a photo like that of yourself and hang it on the mirror that you look into every day. That photo – that is YOU. That is STILL YOU. You are responsible for that little person. You are the steward of that vulnerable, innocent soul who was sent into this dangerous world knowing absolutely nothing. Look at the picture and tell that little person, I will never let anyone harm you again — least of all me. I will treat you with kindness. I will never let anyone say an evil thing about you — least of all me. Thats where I began. That, plus therapy, prayer and meditation... I send you all blessings.
