Elizabeth Kubler-Ross : After loosing Gary, Garth and to many others in such a short time, I am worried about their friends and family and how they are coping. I can only offer this..My Dad died over Christmas 82..Brutal..Christmas carolers in the hallway outside ICU..holding his hand..Like a bad B movie. I had trouble dealing with it..Read some books. My favorite was On death and dying by Ross.Just a few months later I am diving the 14th street bridge in DC the one that the Air Florida plane had hit.My landlady was a woman named Marilyn..Class act. Most everyone in DC is at the top of their game..Marilyn certainly was. She was like the number one nurse in US or something.. traveled all over giving lectures.She was always having me uncork her wine bottles..a full time job. One time she was wandering around my place and spotted the Kubler-Ross book..I know her! You do?..Yes if you can be here on the 4th of July, Ill take you to a party where Ill introduce you..Cool. I did my best to fit in with this crowd. Typically, I didnt distinguish myself by immediately walking face first into the sliders that led to the pool area..Bang! For the next ten minutes everyone was coming up to me and asking if I was OK..A lesser man would have been embarrassed. Elizabeth was very nice.Was wearing the biggest glasses I had ever seen. She asked me if I had any questions for her..Yea, Do you think Ill live through this diving career? Yes you will be OK..Half hour later and two more Scotch I realized that was a stupid question..Tracked Elizabeth down again..We walked outside. I told her about the last day my Dad was alive.. he was sitting up in bed! Happy..I said whats up? Didnt you see the boys in the hallway William?..you must have passed them..Who?..Percy, Trigger, Walter. His brothers that had already passed. No Dad didnt see them..Well stick around son, They are coming back later..were all going fishing!..He died that evening. I asked Ross what she thought of that story..Its simple Bill..Your Dad went fishing with his brothers..like he said. I thanked her. Some societies celebrate a persons death..Its the ones left behind that are suffering. I dont know what happens to bad men when they die..But I know what happens to men like Gary Pollock..They live on in the light.
