Elkhart Tolle says, Give up defining yourself - to yourself or to others. You won’t die. You will come to life. And don’t be concerned with how others define you. When they define you, they are limiting themselves, so it’s their problem. Whenever you interact with people, don’t be there primarily as a function or a role, but as the field of conscious Presence. You can only lose something that you have, but you cannot lose something that you are. Elkhart Tolle says many things that strike me as founded in the truly profound but then get applied in what strikes me as foolish delusion. I think it is very true that in defining ourselves we place artificial constraints upon our possibilities. And it is also true that how others define us IS a major source of where we get the information we buy into in order to define ourselves. Tolle is correct in saying there is a great deal to let go of, and that in letting ho we never lose our true essence of self. Nonetheless, the human brain cannot function without reductionist conceptualism. Our bio-semiotic processing requires it. You must therefore be mindful of the processes that constrain us and the sources of potential misinformation so as to let go of their authority but it is impossible to let go of their operation. We need the conceptualization and the external influences or we cannot function at all. We could lose everything in the possibilities. We are therefore incapable of escaping this process except by fooling ourselves into thinking we have escaped it. It is far better to be mindful of the process and to take responsibility to rework it with authenticity tests and other methodologies to counteract the shortcomings of the inescapable process.
